We are putting the MOTHER back in nature!
"A woman's place is in the home." Not according to the ladies of Camo and Lace. They believe a woman's place is in the woods, on an ATV, at the lake, climbing a rock wall, or on the gun range. This group of adventure-seeking women feels just as comfortable wearing camo as they do wearing lace, which explains their name. Helping other women to explore and enjoy everything in the outdoors while having fun is the main objective of Camo and Lace.
What started out as a once-a-year gathering has evolved into two big events each year with three or four smaller gatherings in between. The annual Womens Outdoor Skills Workshop is held in May. This event features a variety of classes that participants can take that day. Classes range from shooting skeet, archery, gathering wild medicinal herbs, outdoor survival, crafts, fly tying, beginning fishing and gun maintenance, just to name a few of the 14 classes offered.
Spinning off from the May Workshop are day-long fishing trips, fun with guns day, archery night with Flint Bowmen, and when the weather cooperates ice fishing. In the plans are rock-climbing, a pheasant hunt and a ladies tea coming up in June. This past October we managed a weekend "Girls Only" deer camp to bow hunt for whitetails. That is one deer camp that just simply won't be the same anymore!
A big part of Camo and Lace includes education, which leads us up to our Annual For Women By Women Hunters Education
class held in September at Williams Gunsight in Davison. This class became a reality when we learned that many women wanted to take the class, but not with a lot of 12 year old boys. So we put together a class targeted for women. We strive to have as many female instructors as possible. This helps to give the women confidence in what is usually thought of as a "male-dominant" sport. It also takes the pressure off of the spouse, or significant other to the women. We know from experience that its so much easier to learn from someone we don't live with! And with an average of 75 to 80 women taking the class, we think we are on to something.
Whenever the ladies get together ideas are constantly hatching on what to do next. All it takes is one person to say, "I would really like to try..." and if it's something no one has any experience in, we don't let that stop us. We will find he right person to teach us all. We learn side by side and we encourage everyone to try something new. That's what makes Camo and Lace special, we learn by having fun.
Women of all ages and all walks of life have come forward and joined in our fun. Many of us are married, and we enjoy being out with our husbands but we'd like to enjoy the outdoors with other women who enjoy it also. Some women have husbands who don't have a desire to be outdoors. Many of the women are single, some are grandmothers, others have yong children at home and some are high school and college students. But the common bond is a love of nature. Camo and Lace has only begun to explore all the things that nature has to offer. Camo and Lace feels a responsibility to encourage other women to take that step and get outdoors. When women feel comfortable doing something, they in turn will encourage their children, their grandchildren, and other friends to join them. It's a gratifying feeling to know that women are enjoying this newfound freedom to get out of the house and into the outdoors!
